In 1965, Beverly Roberts, a student of Carmen's entered the American Accordionists' Association Virtuoso Championship Competition and won first place. This allowed her to represent the AAA (USA) in Malta that year at the Confederation Internationale des Accordeonistes (CIA) world championship accordion competition.
